Chloe's Cantina & Courtyard

Update on new plantings in March

During The Botanic Apartments construction, some new residents moved into the suburbs. This is a quick update to share what else I've planted in the Courtyard over the past couple of weeks.

Cherry Tomato

I was inspired to get a climbing plant after I discovered this tower hiding in the rosemary jungle (more on that in the next post). And also I have wanted to plant tomatoes, so I got a cherry tomato plant for it.

I did end up planting more cherry tomatoes in the vertical planter after I planted this one. It will be fun to compare how each grows under different growing environments.

Bee's Bliss Sage

I was happy to finally find something for this corner of the Courtyard. Like most of the Courtyard, this spot doesn't get a lot of sun. I found Bee's Bliss Sage in the native plants section of my local nursery (though it is actually a nursery cultivar), and read that it can grow in part shade.

So we will see how it grows! I'm excited to see its pretty purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Spearmint

I got spearmint to try to deter rats, though I don't think it works. No matter; it has pretty leaves and smells good.

Bush Beans

I like eating green beans so I'm excited to watch them grow!

Lavender

More lavender! I saw this little lavender at the nursery and had to get it. I love lavender. I put it in the Glass Room so it can be warm while getting rooted.

Hummingbird Sage

The first true California native I have planted. Like the Bee's Bliss Sage, Hummingbird Sage grows well in part-shade and attracts a variety of pollinators - like hummingbirds, of course!

I'm excited to see if it creates a nice groundcover in this section of the Courtyard, as it spreads by rhizomes.

What are rhizomes, you might ask? In basic terms, the plant grows new plants from underground, and therefore spreads. So much I am learning!

Big Boy Tomato

I decided to plant this big boy tomato straight into the ground. I planted it at the front of the house - near the Downstairs Patio. Complete with a tomato cage that I had found under the house for it to climb.
